A SHORT HISTORY OF THE BAND

The band was originally called  “The Bradford Metropolitan Youth Band” and was formed in 1977 by Robert Hardy who was its Musical Director until his retirement in 1989.  He was Life President of the band until his sad death on 22 July 2002 at the age of 81.

The band took its present name in 1993 and its members are committed to bringing music to all ages and have played concerts throughout Bradford giving pleasure and enjoyment to all who hear them.  The members consist of school children, university students and older more experienced players, including an ex “Black Dyke Band” player.  Their expertise is invaluable in helping the younger players to reach their full potential.  Tuition is also available.

The band’s engagements are many and varied, from Garden Parties, School Galas, Church Fetes, Charity Shows and Carnivals to Remembrance Services.  We also play at Sheltered Housing Complexes and Nursing Homes around Bradford.  The Band is an award winning band, successful at many competitions and previous winners of the Robertshaw and Wharfedale Festivals.

We are also featured in the Woods publication “Music Making in the West Riding of Yorkshire”, currently on sale in music shops in Bradford.

The band is well known in the Eccleshill area for the popular Christmas concerts at St Luke’s and Eccleshill United Reformed Churches.

Rehearsals are every Friday evening from 7:30 pm to 9:15 pm in the basement at St Luke’s Primary School.

New brass or woodwind players at Grade 3 or with one year’s experience are always welcome, whatever their age.
